If you have struggled connecting with your child and are wondering what is going on, ABC therapy may be a great resource for you!
Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) is a short-term parenting program (around 3-4 months) designed to help infants and young children (ages 6-24 months) feel safe, supported, and emotionally connected to their caregivers. It is especially helpful for children who have experienced early stress, disruptions in caregiving, foster care placement, neglect, or difficult life events. The program focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship because secure attachment helps children develop healthy emotions, behavior, and stress regulation.
In ABC, trained parent coaches work directly with caregivers, usually through home visits or telehealth therapy. Coaches help parents recognize children’s emotional needs and respond in nurturing, consistent, and sensitive ways. Parents are encouraged to comfort children even when the child’s behavior may seem confusing, avoid overly harsh or frightening responses, and follow the child’s lead during play and everyday interactions.
Research shows that children whose caregivers participate in ABC often develop
  • improved emotional regulation
  • healthier stress hormone patterns.
Parents also frequently report feeling more confident and connected with their children. Overall, ABC aims to build strong, trusting relationships that support children’s long-term emotional, social, and developmental well-being.
